An election is held in the State of West Virginia each even numbered year.  A Presidential Election is held every four years.  Polling places open at 6:30 AM and close at 7:00 PM.  Voters should report to their assigned precinct to vote.  If you are unsure as to where you are supposed to vote, please contact our office or visit http://www.wvvotes.com

Monroe County is divided into three Magisterial Districts; Western, Eastern and Central.  A County Commissioner is elected from the district from which he or she resides on a rotating basis.  Magisterial District boundaries are determined by population and are drawn by the County Commission.

Early Voting

Residents of Monroe County may vote at the Courthouse prior to Election Day.  This type of voting is called "Early Voting".  Early voters do not have to provide any excuse whatsoever for Early Voting.   The Early Voting Period for the May 13th, 2008 Primary Election is April 23rd through May 10th.  In addition the County Clerk's office will be open on the two Saturday's proceeding the Primary Election from 9:00 AM till 5:00 PM.  These dates are Saturday May 3rd and Saturday May 10th.

Absentee Voting by Mail

Voters who are unable to vote in person on Election Day or during the Early Voting Period may request an application to vote by mail.  Please contact our office at (304) 772-3096 to request an application for an absentee ballot by mail, or you may download the form here

Touch Screen Voting

Monroe County uses the iVotronic Touch Screen Voting Machines.  Voters can cast their ballot simply by touching the screen.  Vote totals are compiled at the courthouse after the closing of the polls.  If your organization would like to see a demonstration of the touch screens, please contact our office.  To view a brief video and to obtain additional information of the Touch Screen Voting System, please click Here.

Election Official (Poll Worker)

If you are interested in serving as a poll worker for an election, please contact our office at (304)  772-3096.  Poll workers must attend a training session and will be compensated for their services.  We are required to have five poll workers at each voting precinct.
